#summerhappens
By the third week in August every year, I hit a wall. My husband is a university professor by day and a professional guitarist by night, so his gigging schedule goes into high gear when the winter term ends in April. True to my wedding vows, I am his roadie and biggest fan, and I love every minute of it! The places we’ve gone and the people we’ve met have enriched my life in ways I never thought possible.
Paul plays in several bands, ranging from jam band original rock to improvisational music to covergrass. Note: Covergrass takes your favourite songs from yesterday to today and plays them in bluegrass style. It might sound bizarre, but it’s incredibly fun and so danceable! Watching people experience this for the first time is my favourite part of every show.
Needless to say, warm weather brings festival season plus our scheduled camping vacations, backyard hangouts with family and friends, etc., and that’s all pretty wonderful stuff!
Deep down, though, I’m a homebody. So by mid-August each year, I hit the wall, and I want to hunker down with my to-do list and putter away at my own pace. No deadlines. No expectations. No entries in my Google Calendar.
I’ve had a few chats lately with friends and clients who had been getting going on plans and projects in late spring with the intention of finalizing those plans or projects during the summer when they would “have more time”.
But then…#summerhappens. I haven’t checked the social mediaverse, but that just has to be a legit hashtag. Things really do go off the rails during the summer! Routines get tossed aside. FOMO kicks into high gear. There are bike rides to take, beaches to visit, road trips to explore, gardens to tend, and so much more that must be crammed into 10-12 weeks of glorious weather, especially if you have kids out of school.
So…if you’re a business owner like me who has let their bookkeeping, business plans, process improvements, and/or other important organizational and money-earning tasks fall a few positions down the priority list for the past few weeks, you’re in good company. I’m with ya’!
Pick a quiet morning to sit with a coffee or tea, bring those items back into view, and fine-tune your focus. Grab a notebook. Jot down your thoughts. Plan your work, and then next week you can work your plan.
